i can’t believe it’s been almost a month and i haven’t shamelessly plugged the trailer for the 14th Udine Far East Film Festival yet. we did this last December during my Christmas break. thank you to everyone involved for reminding me that home is on the set :)

watching Keka again after a long time in a bit. whenever I watch that movie I fear/anticipate running into this scene. an eager, wannabe movie critic would often visit the set. sometimes he’d take pictures, sometimes he’d even document behind-the-scenes with his little camera.
the other critics, they didn’t take him seriously. -who was this boy joining all the e-groups and message boards, blabbering on about how Philippine cinema could be saved? -he’s some kid from Canada. what does he know? -he can’t even speak Tagalog properly. i remember one critic even criticized this particular scene from the movie in a formal review, saying that this kid’s cameo is unrealistic because there’s no way a kid like that would ride the LRT. just goes to show the caliber of the movie critics at the time.
the boy with the Canada shirt, he would change Philippine cinema forever. he would stir things up with the Metro Manila Filmfest, gathering independent filmmakers to protest the process. he would be a major force in the rise of new filmmakers like John Torres, Raya Martin and Sherad Sanchez. he would be the go-to film critic for every major film festival in the world. and even now, more than two years after his passing, his influence can be felt.
happy birthday, Alexis. i celebrate the boy in this frame, and the great man he would eventually become.

Sorry for the shameless plugging, folks! Class project. I’d love if you could help out and come over, actually! No one to cuddle with this February 14? Tired of walking around and seeing sugary-sweet couples walking hand-in-hand? Then come celebrate anti-Valentine’s Day with a screening of KEKA, a serial killer romantic comedy from the Philippines!
The movie tells the story of Keka, a quirky call-center agent obsessed with the past who is traumatized by her boyfriend’s fraternity-related murder. She decides to exact her revenge years later, picking off the murderers one by one. Enter Jason, the lovestruck police detective who falls for her. Everything is hunky dory until Jason is assigned to investigate a series of murders, with all signs leading to Keka.
Winner of the Los Angeles Asia Pacific Festival’s 2003 Audience Award, Keka was hailed by Variety Magazine as “a refreshing change of pace for Philippine cinema” and by Quentin Tarantino as “a hell of a lot of fun.” Watch it this Saturday, 3:30 PM at Popovich Hall 212 for $8 pre-sale in the JKP courtyard (Wednesday and Thursday) or $10 at the door, with free pizza and a drink!Stay after for Q & A with the director!

after all these years I finally got to see All The President’s Men. wow. can’t say i feel the same way for this classic, though, which had a special screening along with Mark Romanek’s never let me go. Farenheit 451 seems like the kind of movie you could enjoy while under the influence of something or while drinking at a bar as this plays in the background. love the trailer, though. THE FILM OF TOMORROW, WITH THE BIG STARS OF TODAY!

the last time i saw alexis he forced me and a bunch of his first-time students to watch this film.
he was probably the only person in the world who could get me to do this.
i kind of miss that.
