best things to do when you’ve been studying 10 hours straight and your brain is officially dead #64: watch music videos of your 90s indierock crushes. i <3 you, Mary Timony.

do you know the feeling of not hearing something for a long time, and upon hearing that song or album again, a flood of emotions takes over ? you may have not heard the song in years, and yet you find yourself remembering every lyric, every turn of the bass, every pause the band makes. you may actually have forgotten the song even existed, and there’s no feeling like rediscovering that song again.
Imagine that feeling, and then magnify that by a thousand. that’s what it’s like to see those songs played live.
I saw Garbage earlier. I’ve forgotten how much the band used to mean to me. I was stupid enough to almost pass on the show. I made it a point to not listen to their albums, because i wanted to greet them like most old, good friends greet each other after a while: with a bit of surprise, because everyone’s gotten so much older, but ultimately with a feeling of coming home. it was weird seeing Shirley Manson for the first time after six years. she was, and still is, one of my favorite frontpeople of all time. the pale white skin, the huge eyes, the tiny dress, the defiant stance, the shock of red hair, and of course— the Scottish brogue.
“tis a rare blessing tae have wot we have roit now. tae not have bain together in seix years, and still be greeted with on umayzing audyens,” she says, the joy of performing again apparent in her eyes. “wots greit aboot this is that we get tae reviset the garbage back catalogue. and oi still clairly remembar recording this song one solemn noit, wroiting it with me boys. we hovent done this song since the Garbage 2.0 tour, thertein years agoo. we’re happy tae do it noow.”
and then she sings this song, a song i was totally in love with, completely forgot existed, and fell in love with again just earlier tonight. the trick is to keep breathing.

so aside from getting a hug from sarah silverman and getting to see the great zach galifianakis do stand-up live, i walked out of the theater with a personal hero of mine— lou barlow, who sang for sebadoh and the folk implosion, and was the bassist of dinosaur jr. you might remember him for this song, which is really only scratching the surface of his awesomeness.

the Jimmy Eat World show yesterday was fantastic. I was hesitant to go to the show because I stopped listening to JEW years ago, so imagine my joy upon finding out that they were actually doing a set commemorating the 10th year anniversary of Bleed American. They did all the songs I wanted to hear, and did this for the encore.
You know how you don’t hear a song for so long that you actually forget that it exists, and when you hear it after more than a decade you realize you know all the lyrics? This is what it was like listening to Goodbye Sky Harbor. I looked for the song the minute I got home and realized that it wasn’t on my iPod, even though I ripped everything from a CD. It’s probably one of those bonus tracks that they hide in between track codes, which explains how long it’s been. if you do have the track please e-mail it to me — notradio@yahoo.com. It’ll be a nice thing to have handy in case of sadness.
One youtube commenter said it best : “Close your eyes during the ending. This is what it must feel like to fly.”

One of the things i looked forward to the most when i moved here was “yes. i will finally have the chance to watch R.E.M.” The band took me through my whole high school life. i remember when Mikey and I got the whole class to get obsessed with Stand, how “What’s The Frequency, Kenneth?” became a common bonding point between a guy I bullied and me, and how we won the battle of the bands because of our cover of “It’s The End of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” (It was also what spurred the first ever conversation between me and future bandmate Jason Caballa)
R.E.M. just disbanded. Looks like the dream will no longer come true. Let us commemorate. This is one of my favorite R.E.M. songs ever. It came from their last truly good album, “new adventures in hi-fi”. this song is so beautiful it breaks me everytime, and this music video is my peg for every goddamn music video i’ve ever made.

me: ano ba yung kinakanta mo? “this is our home” or “this is our fall”?
sarah: this is our fall.
me: talaga? kala ko “this is our home”. parang mas bagay.
sarah: eh gusto ko “this is our fall” eh.
issa (bassist/back-up vocals): HUH?! “this is our fall”? eh all this time “this is our home” yung kinakanta ko eh!
